The journey from La Paz to the San José de Uchupiamonas community, in the heart of Madidi National Park, reinforces its ecological importance. I flew from El Alto at 7:30 in the morning and the terror of boarding a plane that could fit in my living room was alleviated the moment the Amazon began to sprawl beneath us. It was an experience in and of itself. Soon I would be on a boat making my way down those same rivers and estuaries.

1,000 Birds and 1,000 Butterflies: the Madidi Expedition Continues

After a five month break during the wet season, the Identidad Madidi field team is reunited on the fifth leg of its Bolivian scientific expedition. The Andean foothill forests of the upper Hondo River represent our seventh study site in a series of fifteen spanning the unique altitudinal range of almost 6,000 meters (194m to 6,044m above sea level) of Madidi National Park. Identidad Madidi will run for two and a half years between May 2015 and October 2017 and I will continue to blog on its progress and findings.

Bolivian expedition discovers 1,000th bird species

An ongoing expedition in Bolivia’s Madidi National Park has recorded its 1,000th bird species, highlighting the park as a hotspot of avian biodiversity. The park is thought to contain more than 10 percent of all the world’s bird species.

Seven new animal species discovered in Madidi National Park, Bolivia

Scientists on an expedition through Madidi National Park in Bolivia, have now discovered seven animal species that are new to science. In total, the scientists have discovered three frogs, one lizard, and three catfish. Ten plant species are also currently under investigation as potentially new species. The work was conducted by the Wildlife Conservation Society and local partners.

Hadas de colores: En el Madidi se identificaron 1.080 especies

Sus siluetas y tonalidades fueron un regalo para los ojos de los visitantes, ese grupo de 19 científicos que se internópor tierra virgen para describir y registrar especies aún desconocidas, además de mostrar las maravillas del patrimonio natural que guarda la reserva. Fue el 5 de junio de 2015 cuando el equipo de Identidad Madidi iniciósu ambicioso proyecto en aquella despensa inagotable de flora y fauna, área protegida, considerada por la revista especializada National Geographic como uno de los 20 lugares con mayor interes turístico en el ambito mundial. El jefe de la expedicion, Robert Wallace, había anotado como primeros destinos los bosques de galería y las pampas en Apolo, municipio del norte del departamento paceño.
