OBJECTIVES
Increase knowledge of the biodiversity of Madidi by surveying mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish traversing 5000+ vertical meters, with 14 sites every 500m across the altitudinal transect.
Create a biodiversity baseline for monitoring the effect of climate change along the unique altitudinal range of Madidi with quantitative and comparable sampling every 500m.
Significantly increase the total number of species of vertebrates formally registered in the Madidi protected area.
Increase the number of localities for vertebrate species in the Madidi protected area and thereby better understand their distribution in the park.
Discover natural history facts about vertebrate species with poor knowledge such as habitat use, diet and behavioral ecology.
Document the relative abundance of vertebrate species in 14 different habitat types in the Madidi protected area.
Provide access to real field data including those generated through the use of technology for wildlife detection (e.g. camera traps and video cameras) to provide virtual opportunities for public engagement with research.
Create a virtual conservation experience by documenting in real-time the biodiversity of Madidi National Park through pictures, blogs, videos, and other digital materials.
Connect the Bolivian urban public with Madidi as a globally significant national treasure.
Engage municipalities, social organizations and local communities to spread the crucial importance of Madidi for biodiversity conservation and the well-being of its population.
Highlight the work of Bolivian biologists, including WCS scientists, in the conservation of Madidi’s record-breaking biodiversity.
With the results of the initiative create an electronic scientific, cultural, and visual encyclopedia of Madidi in Spanish and English.
