Ho Chi Minh City, October 26, 2023, the Wildlife Conservation Society – Viet Nam Office (WCS Viet Nam) collaborated with the Faculty of Journalism and Communication (FJC), University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University to conduct a sharing workshop on “Experience in integrating the topic of counter wildlife trafficking into the journalism and communication training programs”.

More than 30 participants including Deans of the FJC, Head of Department, lecturers, and students of the FJC together with some experienced journalists in Ho Chi Minh City participated in the sharing workshop. At the event, participants were updated about the illegal wildlife trade (IWT) situation in Viet Nam, and the role of journalism and media in reporting IWT-related violations. They also learned the experience of the Faculty of Broadcasting, Academy of Journalism and Communication (AJC) in mainstreaming this topic into the training curriculum for journalism and communication students at the AJC through a case study.
After the sharing from WCS Viet Nam and AJC, lecturers, and students of the FJC and experienced journalists provided some suggestions for conducting the integration at the FJC, the required knowledge and skills from both lecturers and students to ensure the successful integration. In addition, representatives of WCS Viet Nam and leader of the FJC also discussed and agreed on the plan to organize the on-field journalism training “Stories on the go” for the FJC students in the next quarter.

The sharing workshop is conducted within the framework of the project on “Improving the effectiveness of multi-sectoral collaboration in combating illegal wildlife trade from Africa to and within Viet Nam” implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), combines the expertise and resources of five German ministries, international organizations and NGOs.
