Ninh Binh, February 18 -19th, 2023, Wildlife Conservation Society - Viet Nam Program (WCS Viet Nam) in collaboration with Viet Nam Maritime University and Viet Nam National University of Forestry organized a training of trainers on “Legal Framework on Wildlife Protection''.
The training course is designed to enhance knowledge and skills for lecturers from both universities to effectively integrate the counter wildlife trafficking (CWT) content into the training program for their students.

32 participants who are lecturers from Department of Maritime Law - Maritime Faculty, Viet Nam Maritime University, together with those from Department of Law - Economics and Business Administration Faculty, Forest Animal Department - Faculty of Forest Resources and Environment Management, Institute of Forest Ecology and Environment, and other department related to wildlife protection participated in the training course.

During the training, participants were updated about the role of Viet Nam in the global illegal wildlife supply chain, the current situation of the violations related to wildlife protection in Viet Nam, the regulations about wildlife protection according to the international treaty to which Viet Nam is a member and Viet Nam’s laws; the process of handling violations and criminal cases related to wildlife protection. In addition, participants were also introduced and practiced identifying some commonly traded species and wildlife products with wildlife identification software developed by WCS, and field experience in Thung Nham Bird park in Ninh Binh province.

Participating in this training, lecturers from both universities also had opportunities to exchange with customs officers, forest rangers and experts in CWT about loopholes and challenges in law enforcement of legal framework on wildlife protection. They also discussed the direction for equipping necessary knowledge and skills for students to contribute effectively to the CWT efforts.
The training was conducted in the framework of the project “Combating Wildlife Trafficking in Viet Nam” funded by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), United States Department of State.
