A very early morning sighting of the almost mythical water opossum (Chironectes minimus) in the Machariapo River prompts placement of a camera trap outside the nearby den. Hopefully we can share results later this week. Walks in the savanna to photograph deer produce puma and Andean bear scats, as well as two sightings of military macaws (Ara militaris) above 2,300 meters. Found in lower montane forest and dry montane forest of Madidi, the ecology and natural history of this large macaw is poorly known. Meanwhile the team believes that a plant from the Cyperaceae family, Bulbostylis paradoxa or wakauma in Quechua, maybe an indicator of natural grassland in the region.
