Giant anteater

Easily observable in dry and wet forests, as well as in closed and grassland.  It feeds almost exclusively on ants and termites. He is lonely, except for the mothers who take care of their young, carrying him on his back, achieving a perfect mimicry among his dorsal patterns.

The destruction of their habitat is the main threat to their subsistence. The jurumi is part of the diet of peasants and indigenous people, although some ethnic groups such as the Ishir (from Alto Paraguay) do not consume it because of their religious beliefs.

This species is in a state of vulnerability according to IUCN, and threatened with extinction according to Resol. SEAM N ° 22/42
