The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the Temotu Provincial Government (TPG) have formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen collaboration on Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and marine conservation initiatives across Temotu’s provincial waters.
The signing of this MOU marks a significant milestone in ensuring that Temotu’s marine resources are managed sustainably while fostering economic opportunities and building resilience for local communities. This partnership seeks to promote sustainable management of marine resources, safeguard vital coastal and ocean ecosystems, and enhance the livelihoods of communities that depend on the sea.
Under the partnership, WCS, TPG and national key partners will jointly develop and implement marine spatial planning processes that prioritize conservation, sustainable fisheries, and community development.
At the signing ceremony in Honiara, representatives from both parties emphasized the importance of strong partnerships in protecting Temotu’s rich marine biodiversity for future generations.
The Honourable Premier of Temotu Province, Mr. Stanley Tehiahua, highlighted the significance of advancing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as his government priority despite ongoing challenges. He noted that partnering with WCS would accelerate progress, given that Temotu has already identified its marine conservation priority needs and drafted plans to address them.
Representing WCS, Mr. Barnabas Koroa commended the provincial executive for recognizing the importance of strengthening ocean governance through collaboration and partnership. He encouraged the province to leverage this partnership to advance marine conservation efforts in alignment with national priorities.
The ceremony was witnessed by representatives from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR).
