Spinner dolphin. A spectacle of life in the San José Canyon

The San José Canyon, located in the Pacific of Guatemala, is a site of great ecological importance as it is home to various species of marine mammals, birds, bony fish, sharks, and rays. One of the species that can be observed is the spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris), found in groups ranging from hundreds to thousands of individuals.

In the restoration area “La Pailita”, within the Cruce a La Colorada Management Unit in the Multiple Use Zone, Mr. Luciano Aldana is one of 43 beneficiaries of the Agroforestry Systems (SAF) project. Here, former pastures used for illegal cattle ranching — previously covered only with grass — have been transformed into productive land where milpas grow alongside trees.

Trap camera monitoring has detected New World screwworm infestations in wild animals. In April 2025, in Mirador-Río Azul National Park and the Naachtún-Dos Lagunas Biotope in Guatemala, we captured evidence of a puma (Puma concolor) likely infested with this parasite. This sighting occurred just seven months after the first reported case in domestic animals in the country.

From July 16 to 18, 2025, more than 200 participants gathered at IRTRA in San Miguel Zapotitlán, Retalhuleu, for the Third National Mangrove Symposium: "Connecting the Ecosystem for Sustainability." This technical-scientific event provided a platform to exchange experiences and strengthen capacities related to the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of mangroves in Guatemala.
