Flores, Petén, Guatemala, August 5, 2026.- Communities in Petén now have Climate-Smart Community Development Plans (PDCCI), a tool developed through a participatory process to strengthen climate change adaptation and guide investments based on the priorities of each territory.

These are some of the first actions now being implemented with support from the Biodiverse Landscapes Fund (BLF).
During the official presentation of the plans, representatives from the communities; the Ministries of Agriculture, Environment, Education, Health, and Social Development; environmental organizations in Petén; international cooperation agencies; and civil society agreed on the need to accelerate implementation of the PDCCI, particularly in light of climate projections indicating a possible increase in drought conditions across the region.
The PDCCI cover the following communities:
Maya Biosphere Reserve (RBM)
Maya Mountains–Chiquibul Landscape and Complex IV
Participating authorities and institutional representatives included Igor De la Roca Cuéllar, Executive Secretary of the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP); Carmencita Deyanira Luna Corado, Governor of the Department of Petén; Juliana Correa, from the British Embassy in Guatemala; Marijose Vilá, BLF Coordinator for Mesoamerica; Gabriela Ponce, Director of the Guatemala Program at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS); América Rodríguez, WCS Community Conservation Advisor; Erick Cuéllar, Director of Productive Development at ACOFOP; and Bayron Castellanos, Executive Director of Asociación Balam, among others.
