The Municipality of Nueva Concepción has declared the Tecojate Municipal Bird Sanctuary, a municipal initiative that recognizes the ecological value of this coastal landscape and promotes joint efforts for its conservation. The site includes mangroves, estuaries, and mudflats that provide food, shelter, and resting areas for numerous resident and migratory birds traveling along the Pacific Flyway.
The declaration builds on a process that the Municipality, the Tecojate community, public institutions, and partner organizations have advanced over several years to promote the sustainable management of coastal and marine ecosystems, environmental education, research, and productive activities compatible with conservation.
This effort involved the Municipal Environmental Management Unit (UGAM), the National Council for Protected Areas (CONAP), the National Forest Institute (INAB), the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Guatemala, civil society organizations, the private sector, and other stakeholders involved in the Pacific Conservation Working Groups and Networks.
The creation of the Tecojate Municipal Bird Sanctuary also strengthens efforts to conserve one of the most important coastal and marine landscapes along Guatemala’s Pacific coast, where mangroves, wetlands, and estuaries support a rich diversity of birds and provide essential ecosystem services to local communities.
WCS Guatemala will continue supporting this process alongside local institutions and communities, based on the understanding that conservation is more effective when it is built through partnerships and a shared vision for the territory.
