Four primary schools in the Pomuti, Ndrehet, Kurti and Andra Local Level Government (PNKA LLG) of Manus Province were the first lot to receive climate change educational resource materials from (WCS) Papua New Guinea programme.
Tulu, Bundralis, Ponam and Andra primary schools received six copies of a climate change teachers resource book each and five copies each of two different climate change related posters last week.
Three copies of the resource book were presented to the provincial education division prior to the distribution of the materials to schools.
The resource book was produced under WCS’s climate change adaptation project that was undertaken with other partner organisations in Manus. It provides lessons and activities on climate change, its causes and effects and community adaptation measures that teachers can use to teach their students.
WCS Manus program officer, Ms. Sylvia Noble distributed the materials and said that the teachers were pleased and acknowledged WCS’s initiative.
Bundralis Primary school Head master Mr Vincent Ngih said it would not be surprising to find a question on climate change in the grade eight national exams.
"Climate change is affecting our life style and living patterns. We need this sort of material to broaden our students understanding on these issues to prepare them for such occasion and also help them do basic things to adapt to the changes," said Mr Ngih.
Representing Ponam primary school, head master Mr Paul Pau said that the resource book would support the subject strands provided in the 'Making a Living' curriculum.
The production and distribution of the materials were made possible through the Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) who provided funding assistance towards WCS's climate change initiatives in PNG.
