WCS Goroka recently completed its first ever participatory 3D modelling workshop with locals of the Miruma Upper Asaro Rural Local Level Government (LLG) in the Daulo district - Eastern Highlands Province.
The workshop was conducted at Miruma from the 16th – 20th March and involved two local representatives from each of the seven clans that make up the LLG.
Project Coordinator and WCS Social Researcher, Sylvia Noble said that the workshop was a first of its kind with WCS PNG taking the lead in organizing and facilitating it.
“It was self-explanatory and easy. In the end, participants were able to identify physical features on the 3D map that they developed within that one week,” said Mrs Noble.
As part of the biodiversity project partnership with the Eastern Highlands Provincial government’s ‘Green’ initiative, the workshop was one of the first activities conducted to achieve the main purpose of the project that is to identify opportunities for forest protection, biodiversity and sustainable development within the province.
Mrs Noble said that the workshop would help ward committee members carry out ward planning initiatives, zoning, and also help them make decisions for land use planning and management or environmental education and awareness.
She said participants were proud of their achievement as locals who were never exposed to such learning and participation.
WCS New Ireland’s Community Engagement Specialist, Annisah Sapul was the lead facilitator of the workshop following her experience in 3D modelling techniques.
Annisah said that she was happy to have been a part of the workshop in sharing her knowledge and also learning new things in a new working environment.
GIS officer Jacob Kimalg co-facilitated the workshop while Mrs Noble and WCS Goroka’s Community Engagement Specialist John Par Kalg were involved in the workshop as participants.
