Two elementary teachers from one of WCS PNG’s most remote project sites completed two days of training with local partner and conservation organisation the Research & Conservation Foundation (RCF) on Tuesday, 9th December 2014 in Goroka.

The teachers Peter Aiyo Mark and Laimon Asam were instrumental also in the consultation and verification process of finalising the recently developed elementary curriculum handbook for the primary school students of Ikundi – Souwi Valley.

They were presented with certificates for their participation in the training and input in to the school curriculum.

This resource book is part of the Ikundi Elementary students’ curriculum that integrates their traditional knowledge and sciences.

RCF’s Conservation Education Program Manager Emmie Batebete thanked the teachers for attending the induction and also acknowledged the challenge faced regarding their journey into Goroka.

“It showed through their commitment and passion to get this training and go back and educate the children of their community”, said Mrs Batebete.

She said the teachers were determined and have gained as much as they could in those two days.

RCF education trainer, Sheeba Mirisa said the curriculum is still a working document that both partners (WCS and RCF) and the people of Ikundi will continue to work on to ensure that the students are able to integrate their traditional knowledge together with modern education.

Teacher in Charge, Peter Aiyo Mark thanked WCS PNG and RCF for engaging them in the training.

He said coming out from a remote area in the country to attend such training was a new experience for them. He added that the relationship fostered through education between Ikundi, RCF and WCS PNG has just began and must continue.

The resource book was put together through collaborative efforts from WCS PNG staff members, RCF and the people of Ikundi.
