She might be new to the place but she feels at home.
Volunteer, Sarah Lawless (pictured) joined the WCS PNG New Ireland program in October and says she is looking forward to working with the local communities.
Serah is a social scientist specialising in researching the social aspects of fisheries.
She has previously worked in the Solomon Islands with several marine conservation organisations before she came to PNG and began working with the WCS team in New Ireland.
She now works under the supervision of WCS PNG’s Fisheries Management officer Sven Frijlink, and is working on gender and the socio-economic aspect of the WCS’s sustainable small-scale fisheries program, which is funded by the David and Lucille Packard Foundation.
Her volunteer work with WCS mainly focuses on the factors influencing the abundance of fisheries, harvest rates, demographic data and social profiling of the communities including the different roles of men and women in the harvesting of fish and other economical marine animals.
She says information collected from her work will help WCS establish community and local level government level fisheries management plans, to work towards the long term sustainable management of small-scale fisheries in the province.
