Mongolia's ecosystems, from the vast desert steppe to the expansive grassland steppe, are unique and require tailored conservation strategies. Iconic species like the khulan (Asiatic wild ass), Mongolian gazelle, and snow leopards thrive in these harsh landscapes, relying on large, connected territories to survive. Protecting their movement corridors and essential habitats is crucial for their long-term survival.
Migratory birds also play a vital role, and safeguarding their key wetland and grassland habitats along the eastern steppe flyway is essential. This effort demands a large-scale approach that extends beyond protected areas and fosters cross-border collaboration.
By 2030, WCS Mongolia will focus conservation efforts at the landscape level in three primary areas: the Gobi, Eastern Steppe, and Mountain Steppe.
Partnerships are central to our mission and strategy.
