Great news for the birding community of Guatemala!
At WCS Guatemala, we are very excited to join the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and partner organizations in Guatemala to announce the launch of the new eBird Guatemala portal on May 2, just one week before Global Big Day on May 9.
At WCS Guatemala, we know very well the power of eBird. These data help demonstrate the importance of Guatemala’s landscapes for birds, support conservation and restoration efforts, engage local communities, create opportunities for birding guides, and connect Guatemalan birders with an ever-growing global community.
The opportunity to launch an eBird portal for Guatemala is also a recognition of something very special: the enthusiasm, expertise, and commitment of the country’s birding community. Over the past decade, this community has grown tremendously, with birders, guides, researchers, reviewers, photographers, conservationists, and nature lovers across the country contributing an extraordinary—and ever-increasing—amount of observations to eBird. This launch is a testament to that collective effort and to Guatemala’s increasingly important role in the global movement of birding tourism and community science.
With this launch, Guatemala joins other countries in Latin America and around the world—including Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, and Costa Rica—that already have national eBird portals. The new eBird Guatemala portal will be a shared online space to celebrate Guatemala’s vibrant birding community, share news and resources, promote best practices, expand the use of eBird, and continue strengthening data quality with the support of Guatemala’s excellent team of reviewers.
Above all, eBird Guatemala is a collaborative and inclusive effort. We invite everyone who is passionate about birds, birdwatching, conservation, and community science in Guatemala to get involved.
