Critically Endangered Indian Gharials Return to the Bronx Zoo For the First Time in Nearly 20 Years

BRONX, NEW YORK – April 5, 2017 – The WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo recently added eight Indian gharials (Gavialis gangeticus) to the river habitat in JungleWorld, and they made their public debut just in time for Spring Break in New York City. This is the first time the Bronx Zoo has exhibited the species since 2000.

New Blue Iguana Exhibit at WCS’s Bronx Zoo  Features Species Once On the Brink of Extinction

NEW YORK – Dec. 13, 2016 A new exhibit in the Reptile House at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo features the Grand Cayman iguana (Cyclura lewisi), also known as the blue iguana. The exhibit is now open to the public and highlights an amazing conservation success story.   Once numbering fewer than 20 animals, the species has been brought back from the brink of extinction.

Night Callers: Scientists Listen in on Bats in the Bronx
NEW YORK  (October 27, 2016)  The WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo and Fordham University have announced the results of the first known published study of bats in New York City. The study provides evidence of winter bat activity in NYC and documents the migratory movement of Eastern Red bats and Silver-haired bats through the Bronx Borough. Since little is known about bat behavior in winter, the research results may prove valuable in determining bat migration routes and overwintering strategies.

TIGER CUBS!

Bronx, NY – Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016 – Two rare Malayan tiger cubs (Panthera tigris jacksoni) born at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo are making their public debut at the popular Tiger Mountain exhibit.

The cubs, Nadia and Azul, are both female and were born in January. In the days following the birth, their mother was not providing suitable maternal care so Bronx Zoo keepers intervened and hand-raised the cubs until they were fully weaned.

WCS Archives Launches Project to Help Preserve Historical Records of Zoos, Aquarium, and Field Work

Bronx N.Y.  –August 9, 2016- The WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) Archives has launched a project to process 13 important historical collections, making the materials better accessible to those who need them. The project is supported by a $60,237 grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC).

First Ever Little Penguin Chick Hatched at WCS’s Bronx Zoo Makes Public Debut

Bronx, NY – July 27, 2016 – The colony of little penguins (Eudyptula minor) that debuted in 2015 as a new species at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo has successfully produced a chick that is now on exhibit with the rest of the colony. The chick hatched May 10, 2016. This is the first time this species has bred at the Bronx Zoo in its 120-plus year history.  (See photos/video).

North American Porcupine Born at WCS’s Bronx Zoo
Bronx, NY – June 9, 2016 – Attached photos: A baby North American porcupine was born April 24 at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo and is on exhibit with its family in the Children’s Zoo which was newly renovated in 2015.
