Ha Noi, November 29, 2023, the Wildlife Conservation Society – Office in Viet Nam (WCS Viet Nam) collaborated with the Institute for Environmental Health and Sustainable Development (IEHSD), to organize the Consultation meeting on “Measures to prevent risks of disease transmission between human and wildlife in Viet Nam”.

More than 30 participants who are representatives of the Forest Protection Department, Department of Animal Health from nine (09) cities, provinces included Ha Noi, Ha Nam, Bac Giang, Thai Nguyen, Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Thai Binh, Nghe An, Dong Nai, Ha Noi Wildlife Rescue Center, Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources - Viet Nam Academy of Science and Technology, Viet Nam National University of Forest, Viet Nam National University of Agriculture, University of Science and Technology of Ha Noi, Viet Nam Sanitary and Phytosanitary Notification Authority and Enquiry Point (SPS), and international organizations: FAO, GIZ, STOP Spillover project. In addition, experts from the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, and the Criminal and Administrative Legislation Department, Ministry of Justice also joined the meeting as guest speakers.

At the meetings, participants were shared and updated information about the risks of zoonotic disease transmission along the wildlife supply chain in Viet Nam from different perspectives of animal health, human health, conservation, and wildlife management; results of policy and legal review on disease management and prevention in the wildlife supply chain in Viet Nam. Representatives of some provincial departments also shared the challenges they face in the implementation of legislation on preventing zoonotic diseases, and handling violations related to wildlife. This meeting also provided the participants with the opportunities to discuss, provide their comments, recommendations on measures to effectively prevent the risks of zoonotic disease transmission, especially the ones related to wildlife trade and consumption, based on the application of One Health approach.

The consultation meeting was implemented in the framework of the “Exploring drivers of wild meat consumption and interventions in Viet Nam” project funded by the UK Government through the Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund.
