On March 25-26, 2023, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) - Viet Nam Program in collaboration with Faculty of Maritime Studies, Viet Nam Maritime University (VMU) organized a raising awareness event on promoting on “The role of youth in combating maritime wildlife smuggling” on the occasion of celebrating anniversary of the establishment of Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union. The event was designed to improve awareness of the VMU’s students on the risks of illegal wildlife trade in general and maritime wildlife trafficking in particular.

Thirty-five students of the Faculty of Maritime Studies, VMU, who have quality essays in the online writing contest on “Maritime industry and illegal wildlife trade”, representative of the faculty’s lecturers and Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, and WCS Viet Nam participated in this event. During the event, the students were provided information of the situation of illegal wildlife trade in Viet Nam, particularly maritime smuggling/trafficking of wildlife and its negative impacts, the red flags/signs of violations related to wildlife transporting by sea routes. Especially, the student had an opportunity to discuss the role of relevant stakeholders in the maritime industry and proposed activities to promote the role of youth in wildlife protection, and next steps for VMU students in combating maritime wildlife trafficking in the up-coming time.
