PPR Virus Poses Threat to Conservation

A team of conservationists from the Royal Veterinary College, WCS, Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna published a letter in this week’s edition of the journal Science on the threat of the virus peste des petits ruminants (PPR) to conservation.

WCS: Proposed USFWS and NMFS Regulations Would Weaken Endangered Species Act
In comments submitted to the U.S. Department of the Interior and U.S. Department of Commerce, WCS expressed its opposition to the Administration’s proposed changes to Endangered Species Act regulations that would undermine the core goals of the ESA, as articulated by Congress.

Prince William Visits United for Wildlife Project at the College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka in Tanzania
The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William has visited Tanzania’s College of African Wildlife Management (CAWM), Mweka, as part of his current visit to Africa as President of United for Wildlife. The Duke took part in an exercise as part of SMART training at the college being supported by United for Wildlife and implemented by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

WCS Releases 10 Facts About Gorillas For World Gorilla Day (Monday, September 24th)

 

In anticipation of World Gorilla Day (Monday, September 24th), WCS is releasing a list of 10 facts on the world’s largest primates and one of humankind’s closest relatives. WCS scientists conduct research to inform conservation of the species and manage on-the-ground conservation projects across Africa to protect these great apes and their habitats. In New York City, WCS plays a vital role in giving millions of people the opportunity to see gorillas at its Bronx Zoo Congo Gorilla Forest, home to one of North America’s largest breeding groups of western lowland gorillas.

Baby Mandrill – The World’s Largest Monkey Species – Debuts at the Bronx Zoo

A baby mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) was born at the Bronx Zoo and is on exhibit at Congo Gorilla Forest. The story of the mandrill infant will be featured in the third season of Animal Planet’s THE ZOO, which will premiere in 2019.  The series, which is the first to go behind the scenes at the world-famous zoo, focuses on the powerful and compelling stories of animals and their keepers, and the zoo’s contribution to conserving wildlife around the globe.
