NEW YORK – March 22, 2017 – A new herd of bison is now on exhibit at the WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo.  In November, the zoo received a gift of eight genetically pure American bison from the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux tribes.  The seven female and one male bison are from the Yellowstone National Park bloodline, which are among the few pure herds remaining. The vast majority of present-day bison have small amounts of domestic cattle genes, a reflection of past interbreeding efforts when western ranchers tried to create a hardier breed of cattle.  The historic transfer will further the Bronx Zoo’s long history of facilitating bison conservation projects in the western U.S., and marks the first time bison have been transferred by a tribe to a zoo.

March 16, 2017 -- The Wildlife Conservation Society Canada and Alberta Environment and Parks announced today the discovery last month of the largest Alberta bat hibernation site (based on estimated bat count) ever recorded outside of the Rocky Mountains.

March 9, 2017 – Conservationists working to safeguard tropical forests often assume that old growth forests containing great stores of carbon also hold high biodiversity, but a new study finds that the relationship may not be as strong as once thought, according to a group of researchers with contributions from WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and other organizations.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 7, 2017) – House and Senate conservation champions reintroduced bipartisan legislation to extend for four more years the enormously popular Save Vanishing Species postage stamp, also known as the Tiger Stamp, which raises funds for conservation. The House legislation also calls for the addition of a new African elephant stamp.

February 28, 2017 – It’s animal overload as Animal Planet sets up a flock of Facebook Live video segments and partners with 18 accredited AZA (Association of Zoo and Aquariums) zoos and aquariums across the country, for ‘Inside The Zoo.’ 

Brooklyn, NY – March 1, 2017 –Wreathed hornbills (Rhyticeros undulates) have been on exhibit seasonally at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Prospect Park Zoo since 2014, but recent renovations to the Rotunda Gallery in the zoo’s Animal Lifestyles building included the creation of an indoor hornbill exhibit that will allow guests to enjoy these colorful birds year-around.
