WASHINGTON  (December 5, 2017) – This week, President Trump announced his Administration’s intention to dramatically reduce the size of several national monuments. Such an action, along with similar legislation under consideration in the U.S. House of Representatives, seeks to undermine one of the most important conservation tools in America, the Antiquities Act. 

BOGOTÁ, Colombia (December 5, 2017)—A recent study published in Conservation Genetics by researchers from the Universidad de los Andes, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), and the Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) shows that the Dahl’s Toad-headed Turtle (Mesoclemmys dahli), a rare reptile found only in Colombia, is threatened with extinction due to alarmingly small and fragmented populations and high levels of inbreeding.

November 28, 2017 – The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) announced today that Msafiri Mgumba of the WCS’s Ruaha-Katavi Landscape Program (WCS-RKLP) in Tanzania has been honored with a Conservation Hero Award from the Disney Conservation Fund. 

Brooklyn, NY – Nov. 29, 2017 – Black-footed cats (Felis nigripes), Africa’s smallest species of wild feline, is now on exhibit at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Prospect Park Zoo. Also known as small-spotted cats, black-footed cats are endemic to the arid open savanna and grassland regions of southern Africa primarily in Namibia and South Africa.  

WASHINGTON (Nov. 26, 2017) – One year after the passage and signing into law of the Eliminate, Neutralize, and Disrupt (END) Wildlife Trafficking Act, the U.S. State Department released its mandated report on the current state of wildlife trafficking around the world and lists focus countries and countries of concern.

November 22, 2017 –  Through its award-winning Climate Adaptation Fund, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has announced 12 new grants to nonprofit organizations exploring and implementing new methods for helping America’s wildlife and people adapt to rapidly shifting environmental conditions brought about by climate change.

Bozeman (November 21, 2017) - A new study from WCS, the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), and the University of Nevada-Reno finds that conservation efforts have resulted in successful re-colonization of black bears into portions of their  historic ranges in the Great Basin in Nevada. The animals had been absent from these areas for more than 80 years.

(Fairbanks, Alaska - November 20, 2017) A new study co-authored by WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) addresses concerns over the many Arctic shorebird populations in precipitous decline. Evident from the study is that monitoring and protection of habitat where the birds breed, winter, and stopover is critical to their survival and to that of a global migration spectacle.
