121 And Counting: Nests of Globally Vulnerable Lesser Adjutant Located in Northern Plains of Cambodia
Preah Vihear (November 1, 2017) –Conservationists from Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment (MoE), WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), and local communities have discovered 121 lesser adjutant nests to date in Kulen Promtep and Chhep Wildlife Sanctuaries in the Northern Plains of Cambodia during the 2017 breeding season. WCS has hired 10 local community teams, under the bird nest protection program to locate, monitor and protect nests until fledging. These conditional payments ensure that the globally threatened nests are protected from poaching, egg collection and disturbance.

Senate Passes Resolution Commemorating Sat. Nov. 4 as National Bison Day

WASHINGTON (November 1, 2017) – For the fifth time in five years, the U.S. Senate has passed a resolution marking National Bison Day as the first Saturday in November, which falls this year on November 4th. The resolution comes a year after bison were adopted as the U.S. National Mammal through an act of Congress.

Critically Endangered Sumatran Tigers On Path To Recovery in an ‘In Danger’ UNESCO World Heritage Site

October 23, 2017 – A new scientific publication from WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park Authority looks at the effectiveness of the park’s protection zone and finds that the density of Sumatran tigers has increased despite the continued threat of living in an ‘In Danger’ World Heritage Site.

WCS: Senate’s failure to remove Arctic Refuge drilling from budget endangers one of America’s most pristine places

WASHINGTON (October 19, 2017) – Today, an amendment was offered to the Senate’s budget resolution that would have stopped the effort to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling as a means to fund other priorities, including tax cuts. That amendment failed, and the budget subsequently passed, signifying one step closer to irreparable damage to one of America’s last remaining pristine places.

Congressman Engel Tours Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve in Belize

Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve, BELIZE (October 19, 2017) – Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY) visited the WCS research station at Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve on a Congressional delegation to Belize last month. The focus of the trip was to survey the impact of U.S. foreign assistance programs on livelihoods and conservation in one of the world’s most biodiverse areas.
