WILDLIFE CRIMEFIGHTING BREAKTHROUGH: New ranger patrol method shows major improvements in detection of illegal activities

August 17, 2016 – A team of scientists from WCS, University of York, and Uganda Wildlife Authority have developed a new method of detecting illegal activities in protected areas by as much as 250 percent.

China Sentences International Ring of Radiated Tortoise Smugglers

(Guangzhou August 16, 2016) – Seven defendants who were engaged in smuggling radiated tortoises from Madagascar into China were sentenced to prison terms, according to WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), which praised Guangzhou Intermediate Court’s July 26th verdict. The entire criminal network – from overseas accomplices to Chinese buyers – was targeted and dismantled, sending a serious warning to other would-be illegal traders.

WCS Archives Launches Project to Help Preserve Historical Records of Zoos, Aquarium, and Field Work

The project is supported by a $60,237 grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC).

First Whale Detected by Newly Deployed Acoustic Buoy in New York Bight, and Scientists Say It’s a Big One!
New York (July 28, 2016) – A new acoustic buoy recently deployed by scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) New York Aquarium to listen for some of the world’s biggest animals in the New York Bight has detected its first whale species, and it’s a really big one.
