Local communities are often groups of people who reside in the same area, share a similar way of life or occupation, or have common traditions, perspectives, views, or interests.
Historically, conservation efforts have been implemented through a top-down approach, as represented by the demarcation of protected areas and the exclusion of local communities. Fortunately, this approach is gradually being abandoned. The levels of community involvement have become a crucial indicator for modern conservation practices.
Conservation Approach
Currently, WCS China is working to implement this initiative with local communities in Northeast China. Patrol teams, recruited from local communities, are removing snares and alerting people to human-tiger encounters. Electric fences, built and maintained by local communities, are reducing crop damage caused by wild ungulates. We recognize that our understanding and capabilities related to community engagement are still in development. However, we are committed to progressing towards a human rights-based conservation approach.
