WCS Viet Nam collaborates with government management agencies, scientific partners, and local communities to implement research and conservation activities aimed at the recovery of the Hoan Kiem softshell turtle (Rafetus swinhoei) in the wild. In 2025, efforts focused on applying advanced technologies such as eDNA analysis, fish-detection equipment, and field monitoring methods to confirm presence and track the species in potential habitats, particularly in the Dong Mo Lake area (Dong Mo Lake), where 160 eDNA samples were collected and several images potentially related to an individual Hoan Kiem softshell turtle were recorded.
In addition, WCS Viet Nam supports the development of technical foundations for conservation work by training technical staff in sample collection, the use of modern monitoring technologies, and the implementation of field measures such as installing a net enclosure system to support research activities and protection of the target individual.
These activities contribute to strengthening scientific evidence, enhancing the capacity of Vietnamese conservation teams, and creating an important foundation for future conservation interventions, with the goal of recovering the species population in its natural habitat.
Key achievements
- Collected 160 environmental DNA (eDNA) samples in the Dong Mo Lake area to support research confirming the presence of the Hoan Kiem softshell turtle (Rafetus swinhoei) in the wild. (2025)
- Recorded two images from fish-detection equipment that were assessed as highly likely to be related to an individual Hoan Kiem softshell turtle, providing additional scientific evidence for conservation efforts. (2025)
- Installed a net enclosure system covering approximately 32 hectares and conducted continuous monitoring for 21 days to support the tracking and protection of the target individual in its natural environment. (December 2025)
- Provided training for five staff members from the Hanoi Sub-Department of Livestock Production, Fisheries and Veterinary Medicine on sample collection and the application of new technologies in research and field detection of the Hoan Kiem softshell turtle. (December 2025)
- Enhanced the application of advanced technologies such as eDNA analysis, fish-detection devices, and field monitoring and tracking methods in research, contributing to the development of a scientific basis for conservation interventions and population recovery efforts. (2025)
- Strengthened technical capacity and interagency collaboration among management authorities, research institutions, and conservation partners to support the long-term recovery program for the Hoan Kiem softshell turtle from the brink of extinction.
