I. Background:
From January to May 2026, WCS Viet Nam conducted research to identify health supplements and traditional medicine products labelled as containing Xuyen Son Giap (XSG) and to better understand the market, supply chains, and relevant actors involved in these products. The research identified 16 products that listed XSG as an ingredient and mapped their associated supply chains. Field surveys also found that 10 products were available for sale at 50 traditional medicine shops and one pharmacy in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City. Discussions with sellers indicated that some products have become more difficult to restock, mainly due to inspections and enforcement actions by relevant authorities related to trade fraud and counterfeit goods.
To better understand both the supply and demand sides of the market for products labeled or advertised as containing XSG, WCS Viet Nam plans to conduct a Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) study among consumers of these products in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City. The study will explore consumers' knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practices; their awareness of product ingredients and origins; perceptions of product effectiveness and potential risks; purchasing channels; sources of influence; and other factors affecting their decisions to purchase and use these products.
WCS Viet Nam is seeking a team of consultants to support the implementation of this survey. The findings will provide additional evidence to inform the development of interventions aimed at reducing demand for products labeled or advertised as containing XSG, promoting safe and sustainable alternative ingredients, and contributing to the prevention of illegal trade in products derived from or containing wildlife.
