Little-known Underwater Canyon off New York and New Jersey Nominated as National Marine Sanctuary
Brooklyn, N.Y.  – Nov. 18, 2016 – WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) New York Aquarium is leading a broad coalition of organizations and stakeholders working to help the Hudson Canyon, a magnificent underwater canyon few people know exist. Located just 100 miles southeast of the Statue of Liberty, the Hudson Canyon is the East Coast’s largest submarine canyon. Many species of marine life can be found here, including whales, sharks, turtles, deep sea corals and more.

Vampire Bats and Feral Pigs: A Bad Combination for Wildlife and People
November 18, 2016—A camera trap survey conducted by WCS and other groups to survey wildlife in rural locations in Brazil’s Atlantic forest and Pantanal regions produced a big surprise: the unexpected frequency of vampire bats feeding on both wildlife and livestock in both areas.

WCS Applauds China for Progress in National Park Initiatives

Acoustic Buoy Now Detecting Rare & Endangered Whales  In New York Bight

NEW YORK (November 16, 2016) – An acoustic buoy recently deployed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) New York Aquarium is making its first near real-time detections of two rare great whale species in the New York Bight, including the highly endangered North Atlantic right whale.

Puerto Madryn, Argentina (November 4, 2016)—The Wildlife Friendly Enterprise Network (WFEN) and WCS-Argentina are pleased to announce traceable Certified Wildlife Friendly® wool—part of the “Patagonian Fibers with a Conscience” program—from the "Merino de Peninsula Valdés” ranchers who raise wool in coexistence with wildlife on Peninsula Valdés.
