Biodiversity Expedition in Madidi National Park Discovers New Frog Species
NEW YORK - August 20, 2015  WCS reports that the groundbreaking Bolivian scientific expedition, Identidad Madidi, has discovered a new species of big-headed or robber frog (Oreobates sp. nov.) from the Craugastoridae family in Madidi National Park.

Make Room for Wildlife / Cohabiter Avec la Nature
WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and Appalachian Corridor have partnered on developing a landowner tool to protect wildlife habitat. The guidebook, “Cohabiter avec la nature!” was developed in French to provide guidance on wildlife-friendly residential development and land-use planning in the Appalachians of Southern Quebec.

Lesser Adjutant Storks At WCS’s Bronx Zoo Foster Abandoned Egg and Raise Chick As Their Own
Bronx, NY – Aug. 13, 2015 – A pair of lesser adjutant storks (Leptoptilos javanicus) at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo have successfully hatched two chicks – one of which was from an egg produced by another adult pair. The surrogate parents are caring for both chicks as if they were their own.

August 13 -Tiger Poachers and Dealer Busted In Indonesia
The Acehnese provincial Police (Polda Aceh), the East Acehnese Police (Polres Aceh Timur), and the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Wildlife Crimes Unit (WCU) announced today an enforcement action against wildlife poachers and a dealer for trading tiger parts. The perpetrators were arrested in Aceh Tamiang, Aceh on August 8, 2015.

Saving the Unloved, One Crowd at a Time
New York - August 10, 2015 - A newly released study from WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) offers hope of conservation to the world’s low-profile and more unloved members of the animal kingdom. The study, which appears in the international conservation journal, Oryx, demonstrates that a “Wisdom of Crowds” method can successfully be used to determine the conservation status of species when more expensive standard field methods are not feasible.

Aug. 4 - WCS Queens Zoo Debuts Roosevelt Elk Calf
Flushing, N.Y. – Aug. 4, 2015 – A Roosevelt elk calf (Cervus canadensis roosevelti)born at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Queens Zoo has joined the rest of the herd in the zoo’s woodland habitat.

WCS Congratulates the United Nations General Assembly for Passing Wildlife Trafficking Resolution
New York - July 30, 2015 - The United Nations General Assembly today passed a sweeping resolution that targets the global problem of wildlife trafficking, calling on all 193 UN member states (governments of the world) to take on a series of actions to “prevent, combat, and eradicate the illegal trade in wildlife.”
