Vulture Conservation Strategies & Partners

The Cambodia Vulture Conservation Project was established in 2004, as a partnership of government agencies and NGOs. The project activities are led by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), and other members include Birdlife International in Indochina, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the Angkor Centre for the Conservation Biodiversity (ACCB), the General Department of Administration for Nature Conservation and Protection (GDANCP) of the Ministry of Environment (MoE), and the Forestry Administration (FA) and Department of Animal Health, part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).

The Cambodian Vulture Action Plan details planned vulture conservation activities in the country. It identifies the main threat to vultures in Cambodia as limited food availability, since numbers of large wild ungulate species that constitute the main source of food for vultures are relatively low.

There are relatively large numbers of domestic livestock such as cattle and goats, so the central recommendation of the Cambodia Vulture Conservation Project was that the provision of food at 'vulture restaurants' would help support the species. In particular, vulture restaurants ensure that they receive food which is free from diclofenac, and facilitate the monitoring of these important populations. A vulture restaurant is provision of an animal (a cow is the most usual species) to vultures at an appropriate site within their range.
