Bronx, N.Y. – Aug. 22, 2016– WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Wild View Photo Blog has chosen the finalists for the 2017 Wild View Calendar Photo Contest. Public voting is now underway to determine the 12 winning shots taken at WCS’s Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, and New York Aquarium.

Montauk, a 50-pound, 4-foot female white shark, and Hudson, a 67-pound, 5-foot male white shark, are the first two white sharks tagged by the shark-tagging partnership in New York waters. The tags on these young-of-the-year sharks will allow scientists to track their movements up and down the coast for the next several years.

August 19, 2016 – Seeking to bridge the gap between scientists and the public, WCS Brazil and its collaborators have published Ciência Pantanal (Pantanal Science), a new scientific journal designed to inform rural communities of the latest in environmental studies and issues.

 

Brooklyn, N.Y. – August 19, 2016 – The WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Prospect Park Zoo will host Carnival Zumba to celebrate West Indian culture on Sunday, Aug. 28, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event will be attended by local government officials State Senator Jesse Hamilton, Assemblywoman Diana Richardson, State Senator Kevin Parker, and Congresswoman Yvette Clarke.

Bronx, NY – August 19, 2016 – The WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo welcomes the addition of two California sea lion pups born in June. 

(Fairbanks, August 18, 2016)  Conservation of intertidal habitat— 65 percent of which has been lost over the last 50 years— is critical to the survival of countless birds during migration on the East Asian Australasian Flyway.  In an effort to understand the threats and inform conservation of these areas, scientists from The Institute of Biological Problems of the North (Russian Academy of Sciences) and WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) have collaborated to identify vital stopover areas for the dunlin, a shorebird known to migrate up to 7500 km (4700 miles) to reach its destination.

New York – Aug. 17, 2016 – As WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) New York Aquarium celebrates 120 years, it will host the fourth annual Sip for the Sea at the WCS Central Park Zoo on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m.

August 17, 2016 – A team of scientists from WCS, University of York, and Uganda Wildlife Authority have developed a new method of detecting illegal activities in protected areas by as much as 250 percent. 

(Guangzhou – August 16, 2016) – Seven defendants who were engaged in smuggling radiated tortoises from Madagascar into China were sentenced to prison terms, according to WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), which praised Guangzhou Intermediate Court’s July 26^th verdict. The entire criminal network – from overseas accomplices to Chinese buyers – was targeted and dismantled, sending a serious warning to other would-be illegal traders. 

August 11, 2016 – Just in time for World Elephant Day, this Friday, August 12^th, WCS’s 96 Elephants campaign announced an ambitious effort to break the Guinness World Records™ for the largest display of origami elephants to draw attention to the plight of Africa’s elephants, which continue to be wiped out by ivory poachers.
