Tiger Facts from WCS

Bronx, NY – July 29, 2017 -- It’s Global Tiger Day, Saturday, July 29.

This day was  designated as Global Tiger Day at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in 2010 to call attention to the severe decline of tigers in the wild. On this 7th Global Tiger Day, the Bronx Zoo and all of the Wildlife Conservation Society, share ten tiger facts.

A NEW YEAR’S ARREST OF POACHERS ADDS YET ANOTHER REASON FOR ALARM
BANGALORE, INDIA (January 10, 2016) – WCS reports that a poaching gang recently arrested for shooting wildlife in a well-known tiger reserve consisted of software engineers, environmental consultants, wealthy coffee planters, and a leading member of the Rifle Association of Karnataka State. Conservationists say the incident is particularly disturbing because the group consisted mostly of affluent and well-educated men.

Three Men Selling a Tiger Skin Arrested in West Lampung, Indonesia
Lampung, Indonesia (September 28, 2016) Lampung Barat Police in collaboration with Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park rangers (BBSNP), WCS-Wildlife Crimes Unit (WCU) and Rhino Protection Unit (RPU) arrested three suspects and confiscated a Sumatran Tiger  skin found on sale in the West Lampung area on September 20, 2016.

CITES CoP17: WCS Applauds Lao PDR for Committing to Shut Down Commercial Tiger Farms

Tiger Traders Arrested by Indonesian Police in Leuser Landscape, Indonesia
The Aceh Provincial Police, Bireun District Police (Polres Bireun), and the Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) Wildlife Crimes Unit (WCU) announced today an enforcement action in a case involving trade in tiger parts. One perpetrator, arrested in Bireun, Aceh, Sumatra, on March 18, 2016, was linked to a second, who later turned himself in.

Major Illegal Tiger Skin Trader Arrested in Indonesia
NEW YORK (December 15, 2015) – The Criminal Investigation Division of the Indonesian National Police and the WCS’s Wildlife Crimes Unit (WCU) announced today an enforcement action against a major tiger skin trader and an intermediary who offered tiger skin products to potential buyers. Both were  arrested in Jakarta, on December 11, 2015.
