Are Herders and Livestock Bad for Rare Wildlife? It’s Complicated.
NEW YORK (January 13, 2017) The Denver Zoological Foundation, WCS(Wildlife Conservation Society) and other partners have published a paper appearing in the early view edition of Conservation Biology that looks at the positive and negative relationships occurring between pastoralists, livestock, native carnivores and native herbivores in the world’s largest unfenced grassland and desert.

A NEW YEAR’S ARREST OF POACHERS ADDS YET ANOTHER REASON FOR ALARM
BANGALORE, INDIA (January 10, 2016) – WCS reports that a poaching gang recently arrested for shooting wildlife in a well-known tiger reserve consisted of software engineers, environmental consultants, wealthy coffee planters, and a leading member of the Rifle Association of Karnataka State. Conservationists say the incident is particularly disturbing because the group consisted mostly of affluent and well-educated men.

MEDIA NOTE: Confiscated Birds Released to Wild in Indonesia

(New York - December 22, 2016) North Maluku Nature Resource Conservation Agency (BKSDA), Indonesian Cockatoo Conservation (KKI) and WCS-IP (Wildlife Conservation Society-Indonesia Program) released 117 confiscated birds in North Maluku, Indonesia on Thursday, December 15, 2016. Released birds included 49 chattering lorries, 40 white cockatoos and 28 eclectus parrots.

WCS Applauds China for Progress in National Park Initiatives
NEW YORK (November 16, 2016) – WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) applauds the statements made on November 4th by the General Director of National Development and Reform Commission, Mr. Xu Shaoshi, indicating that the SangJiangYuan National Park pilot program has been initiated while a second pilot—the Amur Tiger and Amur Leopard National Park program—is in the approval process.
