June 5, 2013 -- A new National Marine Fisheries Service proposal to authorize seismic oil and gas surveys in Atlantic coastal waters of the U.S. is drawing sharp criticism from scientists concerned about potential impacts to marine ecosystems and wildlife, specifically the endangered North Atlantic right whale.  

June 5th, 2017 - President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon announced today at the United Nations Ocean Conference in New York his country’s creation of a massive marine protected areas network consisting of 9 new marine parks and 11 aquatic reserves.

November 29, 2016—A new generation of threatened hawksbill sea turtles is thriving in the protected waters of Glover’s Reef Atoll, Belize, evidence that efforts to protect these and other marine species in one of the world’s great barrier reef systems are working, according to WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and the Belize Fisheries Department.

Located just 100 miles southeast of the Statue of Liberty, the Hudson Canyon is the East Coast’s largest submarine canyon. Many species of marine life can be found here, including whales, sharks, turtles, deep sea corals and more.

New York – Sept. 15, 2016 – Nineteen of New York City's best chefs paired their food with great wine from Jekel Vineyards and Bonterra Organic Vineyards at Sip for the Sea 2016 to benefit the WCS’s New York Aquarium. Hundreds attended the event, which raised awareness about the importance of sustainable seafood.  All proceeds will support the New York Aquarium and WCS’s commitment to marine conservation locally and around the world.

August 25, 2016—A juvenile white shark, being tracked via satellite in the New York seascape, has been named after Theodore Roosevelt, the US president who appointed the committee in 1894 asking New York State to establish a zoological society in New York City -- which through the years developed into the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Montauk, a 50-pound, 4-foot female white shark, and Hudson, a 67-pound, 5-foot male white shark, are the first two white sharks tagged by the shark-tagging partnership in New York waters. The tags on these young-of-the-year sharks will allow scientists to track their movements up and down the coast for the next several years.
