June 8, 2017 – A team of staff, volunteers, partners and educators from WCS’s New York Aquarium cleaned the beach at Kaiser Park in Coney Island, Brooklyn today to celebrate World Oceans Day. 

June 8, 2017 – For World Oceans Day – celebrated today across the globe –  WCS launches the 30-Day Plastics Challenge to reduce use of single-use disposable plastics, and to bring attention to the fact that, by some estimates, a staggering 5 trillion pieces of plastic are currently floating in the world’s oceans.

June 6, 2017 – To highlight the incredible wildlife diversity – and looming threats – to New York’s marine environment, WCS’s New York Aquarium and National Geographic have collaborated on a one-of-a-kind map of the 16,000-square-mile area from Montauk Point, New York to Cape May, New Jersey.

June 5, 2013 -- A new National Marine Fisheries Service proposal to authorize seismic oil and gas surveys in Atlantic coastal waters of the U.S. is drawing sharp criticism from scientists concerned about potential impacts to marine ecosystems and wildlife, specifically the endangered North Atlantic right whale.  

June 5th, 2017 - President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon announced today at the United Nations Ocean Conference in New York his country’s creation of a massive marine protected areas network consisting of 9 new marine parks and 11 aquatic reserves. 

February 28, 2017–WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) applauds the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for its recent decision to add the Hudson Canyon—the East Coast’s largest submarine canyon—to the inventory of sites now under consideration for National Marine Sanctuary status.

January 6, 2017 –WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) commends the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management for today’s announcement on the decision to deny six permit applications for airgun seismic surveys in the Mid- and South Atlantic waters of the eastern United States. 

November 29, 2016—A new generation of threatened hawksbill sea turtles is thriving in the protected waters of Glover’s Reef Atoll, Belize, evidence that efforts to protect these and other marine species in one of the world’s great barrier reef systems are working, according to WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and the Belize Fisheries Department. 

Brooklyn, N.Y.  – Nov. 18, 2016 – WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) New York Aquarium is leading a broad coalition of organizations and stakeholders working to help the Hudson Canyon, a magnificent underwater canyon few people know exist. Located just 100 miles southeast of the Statue of Liberty, the Hudson Canyon is the East Coast’s largest submarine canyon. Many species of marine life can be found here, including whales, sharks, turtles, deep sea corals and more.
