Pangolins at ‘Huge Risk’ as Study Reveals Dramatic Increases in Hunting Across Central Africa
July 19, 2017--Hunting of pangolins, the world’s most illegally traded mammal, increased by a staggering 150 percent in Central African forests from 1970s up to 2014, according to a new study by the University of Sussex, WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), and other groups.

Endangered Cuban Crocodiles Come Home
HAVANA, Cuba (July 13, 2017) – Experts from WCS’s Global Conservation Programs and WCS’s Bronx Zoo assisted Cuban conservationists in the recent release of 10 Cuban crocodiles (Crocodylus rhombifer) into Cuba’s Zapata Swamp as part of an ongoing recovery strategy for this Critically Endangered species.

DNA Assessment of Southern Humpback Whales Finds That Loyalty to Calving Grounds Drives Population Differences
July 6, 2017 – Scientists conducting the first circum-global assessment of mitochondrial DNA variation in the Southern Hemisphere’s humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) have found that whales faithfully returning to calving grounds year after year play a major role in how populations form, according to WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), the American Museum of Natural History, and a number of other contributing organizations.

Wildlife of Northern Central African Republic in Danger,  Urgent Actions Required to Secure Remaining Wildlife Populations and Contribute to Stabilization of the Region
BANGUI, CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC (June 29, 2017)—The first aerial assessment of the impact of Central African Republic’s recent conflict on wildlife and other natural resources in the northern part of the country shows that wildlife populations have been depleted in large areas of their former range, yet there is hope as some populations of Kordofan giraffe, giant eland, buffalo, roan, and other key species that still survive in low numbers.

WCS’s Queens Zoo Helps Howler Monkeys Thrive in Belize

May 17, 2017 – Recent WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) Queens Zoo surveys of black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra), translocated to Belize’s Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary 25 years ago reveal that the effort has been a great success, with monkeys now thriving throughout the reserve after going locally extinct 40 years ago.

Famous Tree-Climbing Lions of Uganda Roaming Farther  As Prey Animals Decrease
KAMPALA, Uganda (May 11, 2017) – Scientists in Uganda studying the behaviors of the country’s famous tree-climbing lions have found that the home ranges of lion prides in the study areas have increased over time as they search farther for diminishing numbers of prey animals.
