Climate Adaptation: WCS Announces $2.5 Million in Awards to 12 Conservation Organizations Across the US

New “Trillion Trees” Partnership Calls for Global Efforts To Protect and Restore 1 Trillion Trees
November 15, 2017 –– The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), WWF, and BirdLife International today launched the Trillion Trees programme, a 25-year initiative to help implement and scale global forest commitments and spur greater ambitions towards protecting and restoring one trillion trees by 2050—the number needed to reverse the global decline in tree cover.

Annual Adirondack Loon Census: Volunteers Wanted
June 22, 2017 - WCS's Adirondack Program announces a call for volunteers to survey loons on Adirondack lakes as part of the 17th Annual Adirondack Loon Census. The event will take place on Saturday, July 15, 2017, from 8:00-9:00 a.m. Participants can choose which lake in the Adirondacks they want to survey when they sign up.

Cool Effect Partners with WCS to Save Madagascar’s Makira Natural Park
June 15, 2017 -- Cool EffectTM, a non-profit organization curating the world’s premier carbon reduction projects, announced the addition of Madagascar’s Makira Natural Park Project to its platform in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Individual contributions to the project will reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and conserve the rainforest’s endangered plants and species.

Climate change refuge for corals discovered by WCS scientists (and how we can protect it right now)
May 17, 2017 – WCS scientists have discovered a refuge for corals where the environment protects otherwise sensitive species to the increasing severity of climate change. The bad news is that the reefs are showing signs of being overfished and weak compliance with local fisheries laws needs to be reversed to maintain the fish that help to keep reefs healthy.

WCS STUDY: Some – But Not All – Corals Adapting to Warming Climate

May 2, 2017 – A new WCS study reveals evidence that some corals are adapting to warming ocean waters potentially good news in the face of recent reports of global coral die offs due to extreme warm temperatures in 2016. The study appears in the latest issue of Marine Ecology Progress Series.

Big Bat Find in Alberta’s Boreal Forest

March 16, 2017 -- The Wildlife Conservation Society Canada and Alberta Environment and Parks announced today the discovery last month of the largest Alberta bat hibernation site (based on estimated bat count) ever recorded outside of the Rocky Mountains.

Carbon-based Approaches for Saving Rainforests Should Include Biodiversity Studies
March 9, 2017 – Conservationists working to safeguard tropical forests often assume that old growth forests containing great stores of carbon also hold high biodiversity, but a new study finds that the relationship may not be as strong as once thought, according to a group of researchers with contributions from WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and other organizations.
