EGG HUNT -- SCIENTISTS DISCOVER EGGS OF ONE OF WORLD'S MOST ENDANGERED TURTLES

April 11, 2017 - Move over Easter Bunny. A team of Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)/Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) scientists working in Myanmar have reported the successful recovery of 44 fertile eggs of the critically endangered Burmese roofed turtle (Batagur trivittata) – one of the world’s most endangered turtles with less than five females remaining in the wild.

Little Tortoise, Big Range
January 24, 2017 – WCS scientists have discovered the impressed tortoise (Manouria impressa) in the Hukaung Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in northern Myanmar, some 528 miles from its known range in that country.  The researchers reported their finding in the latest issue of the journal Asian Herpetological Research

CITES CoP17: Conservationists Urge Immediate Action to End Poaching of Ploughshare Tortoise
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - September 26, 2016 - Unless the government of Madagascar takes swift action to enforce international anti-poaching and anti-trafficking laws, the country’s largest tortoise—the ploughshare tortoise (or angonoka tortoise)—will likely go extinct in the wild within the next two years.

Laos, China and Viet Nam Enhance Cooperation to Combat Transnational Wildlife Trafficking Networks
April 7, 2016 – Frontline enforcement officers from key provinces, ports and border posts in Laos, China and Viet Nam completed an inter-agency field mission this week to share experiences, approaches and update the situation on wildlife smuggling networks along the major Indo-Burma trade route.

July 13th - One of World’s Rarest Turtles Heading Back to the Wild
WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Fisheries Administration announced today that 21 captive-raised southern river terrapins have been released back into their native habitat in southwest Cambodia. More than 150 villagers, government representatives, and religious leaders attended ceremonies for the release.

Scientists Studying Blue Whale DNA Uncover an Epic Journey by “Isabela”and First Link to Breeding Ground for Chilean Blue Whales
NEW YORK (June 11, 2015)—Scientists studying blue whales in the waters of Chile through DNA profiling and photo-identification may have solved the mystery of where these huge animals go to breed, as revealed by a single female blue whale named “Isabela,” according to a recent study by the Chile’s Blue Whale Center/Universidad Austral de Chile, NOAA and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
