WCS has no shortage of dedicated conservationists, and recently Melvin Gumal was recognized for his work as a finalist for the Whitley Award. The prestigious award honors exceptional individuals working in grassroots conservation in the world's developing countries, as Melvin has as WCS Malaysia Programme Director.

Gumal has been leading a team of Malaysian conservationists on: orangutan conservation in the Batang Al region; elephant and tiger conservation in the Endau-Rompin region of Peninsular Malaysia; and a host of other smaller conservation projects.

The eight finalists were selected from a field of more than 170 applicants and the winner will be announced May, ,8 at the Royal Geographical Society in London.
