Job Purpose:
The senior researcher will be part of the Orangutan Unit team within the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Malaysia based in Kuching, Sarawak. The person will be a key addition to the team currently working on orangutan population research and conservation outreach to local communities around key orangutan habitats. The senior researcher reports to the coordinator and assistant coordinator for the job scopes listed below.
Major responsibilities:
• To lead and train teams of researchers in the field and across monitoring, protection and community pillars.
• To prepare field reports and project updates for reporting to donors and partners.
• To prepare concept notes for project proposals.
• To conduct project-based conservation activities including but not limited to orangutan nest count surveys, rapid assessments of orangutan nests, community patrol and training workshops, as well as public events (in person and online), among others.
• To attend training and workshops on methods, statistical analysis relevant to wildlife research, ethics, the Spatial Monitoring And Reporting Tool (SMART)-related modules, and other related to conservation of wildlife in Malaysia.
• Reading, collection and interpreting of current literature and publications associated with the conservation initiative.
• Keeping up to date with new research and technologies.
• Manage daily projects assigned by Coordinator/Assistant Coordinator or team leaders in collaborative activities.
• Work closely with colleagues in various units to make sure work requirements are met.
• To familiarize yourself with the Company’s processes and policies.
• To perform other duties as may be required by your supervisor and the Director.
Minimum requirements and job skills:
• Bachelor’s degree-level graduate with 3-year working experience in relevant scientific discipline (e.g., wildlife or animal science, marine or aquatic science, or any scientific related field).
• Training in relevant biological disciplines (e.g., marine surveys, fisheries, plants).
• Able to communicate in English and Malay and have moderate writing skills in both; ability to communicate in other languages is a plus.
• Willingness to travel for extended periods of time and able to work in a team setting.
• Passionate and enthusiastic about wildlife conservation.
• Citizen of Malaysia and resident of Sarawak.
