With 65% of its territory covered in forest, the Republic of Congo is home to ecosystems of global importance. Its territorial waters are crucial migration and breeding grounds for many endangered species, including sharks, rays and whales. Its forests are home to some of the world’s most trafficked wildlife, including the pangolin and the grey parrot, as well as crucial populations of critically endangered species, including 20% of the world’s forest elephant population, and 62% of the world’s gorillas.
