Wildlife-friendly rice is now available for sale at selected establishments in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. A few shops carry rice in smaller, consumer-sized packages. WCS has initiated a promotional campaign, including brochures, point-of-sale posters, signs and other materials.
In 2009, almost 36 tons of paddy rice was purchased at a 28% premium from four villages in the protected areas of Preah Vihear; over 14 tons had been sold by the end of November.
WCS has facilitated the creation of a new local non-governmental organisation, Sansom Mlup Prey, which has taken over the marketing and monitoring roles. It is anticipated that each of the four villages will increase their production of Wildlife-friendly Rice in the following season, and five additional villages will have completed their land use plans in the hope of the wildlife-friendly scheme in 2011.
