North American Porcupine Born at WCS’s Bronx Zoo

Bronx, NY – Aug. 26, 2015 – Attached photos: A baby North American porcupine was born at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo and is on exhibit with its family in the newly renovated Children’s Zoo. The young male porcupine was born on July 28 to mother, Alice, and father, Patrick.  This is the pair’s third offspring.

Make Room for Wildlife / Cohabiter Avec la Nature
WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and Appalachian Corridor have partnered on developing a landowner tool to protect wildlife habitat. The guidebook, “Cohabiter avec la nature!” was developed in French to provide guidance on wildlife-friendly residential development and land-use planning in the Appalachians of Southern Quebec.

Lesser Adjutant Storks At WCS’s Bronx Zoo Foster Abandoned Egg and Raise Chick As Their Own
Bronx, NY – Aug. 13, 2015 – A pair of lesser adjutant storks (Leptoptilos javanicus) at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo have successfully hatched two chicks – one of which was from an egg produced by another adult pair. The surrogate parents are caring for both chicks as if they were their own.

Aug. 4 - WCS Queens Zoo Debuts Roosevelt Elk Calf
Flushing, N.Y. – Aug. 4, 2015 – A Roosevelt elk calf (Cervus canadensis roosevelti)born at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Queens Zoo has joined the rest of the herd in the zoo’s woodland habitat.

Two Baby Western Lowland Gorillas Debut at WCS’s Bronx Zoo
Bronx, NY – April 15, 2015 – Two infant western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) are making their public debut at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo. This is the second pair of gorillas born at the Bronx Zoo in just over a year.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine and its Feline Health Center, and the University of Glasgow's Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine have just co-convened the first "Vaccines for Conservation" international meeting at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo in New York City. Experts from around the world focused on the threat that canine distemper virus poses to the conservation of increasingly fragmented populations of threatened carnivores. While canine distemper has been known for many years as a problem affecting domestic dogs, the virus has been appearing in new areas and causing disease and mortality in a wide range of wildlife species, including tigers and lions. In fact, many experts agree that the virus should not be called “canine distemper” virus at all, given the diversity of species it infects.
