WCS’s Prospect Park Zoo Host Carnival Zumba
To Celebrate West Indian Culture
Sunday, August 28; 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Brooklyn, N.Y. – August 19, 2016 – The WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Prospect Park Zoo will host Carnival Zumba to celebrate West Indian culture on Sunday, Aug. 28, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event will be attended by local government officials State Senator Jesse Hamilton, Assemblywoman Diana Richardson, State Senator Kevin Parker, and Congresswoman Yvette Clarke.
Activities include:
Carnival Headpiece Making – Visitors will join members of the West Indian American Day Carnival Association in making these decorative and brightly colored traditional headpieces. (11 a.m.)
Storytelling – Stories with animal and Caribbean themes will be read. (12:30 p.m.)
Zumba with the Sea Lions – The zoo’s sea lion training session gets some additional flair with a Zumba instructor leading the audience. (2 p.m.)
Animal Chats – Meet the scarlet ibis, the national bird of Trinidad. This tropical bird is native to South America and the islands of the Caribbean. The species has striking red plumage that comes from their diet of shrimp and other shellfish. (Noon in the zoo’s aviary.
EmblemHealth Giveaways – A partner for the event, EmblemHealth will manage a kiosk offering giveaways to visitors.
State Senator Jesse Hamilton, EmblemHealth, and the West Indian American Day Carnival Association have partnered with WCS’s Prospect Park Zoo on this event.

The Wildlife Conservation Society’s Prospect Park Zoo – $8 for adults, $6 for seniors 65 and older, $5 for kids 3-12, free for children under 3. Zoo hours are 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. weekdays, and to 5:30 P.M. on weekends and holidays, April through October. 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. November through March.
