Open Position: Field Intern (Paid)

Location: Thanjavur/Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu 

Programme: Ocean Giants - Marine Programme 

Reports to: Project Assistant - Ocean Giants 

Desired Work Experience: Fresher or up to 1 year 

Position Type: Internship (6 months, extendable based on performance) 

Remuneration:  Monthly Stipend, as per WCS -India norms, for a Graduate or a Post Graduate. 

About the Project 

The Ocean Giants workstream of the WCS-India Marine Programme focuses on reducing the incidental capture, or bycatch, of marine megafauna such as dolphins, dugongs, and sea turtles in Indian fisheries. We conduct participatory research, capacity development workshops, and awareness programmes for stakeholders, fostering partnerships with fisheries societies and government agencies to achieve our conservation goals. 

About the Position 

We encourage applications from candidates who are recent graduates or have less than a year of work experience. The Field Intern will support the Ocean Giants Tamil Nadu team in field activities, research, outreach material development, and other programmatic deliverables. 

Role and Responsibilities 

  • Assist in conducting field surveys and collaborative research activities in the Palk Bay region. 
  • Support the organisation of workshops and training programs in Tamil Nadu. 
  • Collect primary and secondary data through desk-based research and field studies. 
  • Assist in developing outreach materials for the project and translating them into Tamil. 
  • Support collaborative engagements, including stakeholder meetings and events. 
  • Help in the preparation of work plans and project reports. 
  • Perform any additional tasks assigned by the Line Manager. 

 

Essential Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biological Sciences or related disciplines. 
  • Proficiency in Tamil (written and spoken). 

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel. 

Desired Qualifications and Skills 

  • Experience in community engagement or working with stakeholders. 

  • Basic knowledge of marine conservation challenges, particularly about the marine megafauna. 

  • Good organisational and communication skills.
