The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a world leader in on-the-ground wildlife conservation. Founded in 1895 as the New York Zoological Society, WCS is an international organization dedicated to conserving and protecting the Earth’s wildlife and ecosystems. WCS has been working in partnership with the Royal Government of Cambodia since 1999, providing technical advice and support for the conservation of key habitats and species across the country. Within the Tonle Sap Landscape our collaborative projects with the Ministry of Environment and Fisheries Administration focus on law enforcement, eco-tourism, biodiversity monitoring and ensuring communities receive equitable benefits from protected areas, which are funded by a wide range of bilateral, multi-lateral and foundation donors. Prek Toal, located in the seasonally flooded forest of the Tonle Sap Lake is one of our most successful projects within the Tonle Sap Landscape.

 

The primary objective of the position is to advise the Prek Toal Wetland Project Manager and Ministry of Environment counterpart staff on the implementation and monitoring of project activities. The position is an advisory not line-management position that will be involved in decision making on site with the project managers. The Prek Toal Wetland Project Technical Advisor reports to Senior Technical Advisor.

 

Responsibilities:

 

-          Support protected area manager to develop a management plan for Prek Toal Core Area that addresses current threats and makes the most of opportunities

-          Provide technical support and supervision to project staff to develop work plans and implement biological monitoring activities and community engagement

-          Provide assistance to protected area staff to develop ecotourism regulations and facilities, and to provide a good service to tourists

-          Support protected area staff with the implementation of SMART (a law enforcement monitoring and management tool), assisting with the analysis of monthly, quarterly and annual SMART reports for both biodiversity monitoring and patrol teams and the implementation of an adaptive, intelligence led enforcement strategy

-          Help identify staff training needs, and where possible, deliver or solicit appropriate training, including improving planning, implementation and reporting skills of field teams.-          Conducting research activities and provide support to researchers as needed.

-          Work with local NGO partners to support the expansion of conservation and community activities, whilst ensuring that they are implemented to a high standard and benefit biodiversity and people

-          Maintain and develop good donor relations, through high-quality, timely reporting and coordinating visits

-          Ensure project implementation is in line with donor and WCS policies and procedures

-          Any other duties as directed by your supervisor

 

Qualifications and experience

·       At least five years experience of working in NRM is essential, experience of fisheries or wetlands issues, and work with communities is desirable

·       At least an MSc in a relevant subject is essential

·       Experience of working in a remote environment, and willingness to continue to do so is essential
