The aim of the QWIO project is to carry out a scientific assessment
of underwater noise from shipping and maritime services and its effects
on large cetaceans, sharks, and sea turtles in the Western Indian
Ocean, and - in consultation with the private sector and the authorities
concerned - to identify and initiate implementing concrete and
practical measures to avoid collisions and reduce noise that are
accepted by regional governments, ship owners, the ports concerned and
relevant international authorities.
