Announcing a New Direct Access Fund for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Protecting Forests in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and Rainforest Foundation Norway (RfN) are working with Indigenous People and local organizations to launch the first-ever direct access fund for Indigenous Peoples and local communities to protect forests in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Fatal Attack on Eco-guard in DRC’s Okapi Wildlife Reserve (English and French)
It is with deep sorrow that the Okapi Wildlife Reserve (OWR) confirms the death of an eco-guard, following an attack by armed perpetrators on a team of eco-guards who were on a surveillance mission on June 27 in the vicinity of "Mondial," an illegal mining site established in the central sector of the Reserve. Today a consortium of farmers, conservation organizations, companies, government bodies, and universities and research institutes announced an innovative landscape-focused collaboration to secure the future of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ituri Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and to stimulate the local economy by supporting the production of sustainable cocoa.
