Endangered Penguins Increase Their Colony at New York Aquarium
The WCS New York Aquarium’s breeding program for the African black-footed penguin (Spheniscus demersus) has successfully added four more chicks to its colony.

Earth Day 2019: New York Aquarium and Aquarium Conservation Partnership Further Commitment to Reducing Plastic Pollution

On Earth Day 2019, aquariums across the United States are leading by example in the fight against one of the threats facing ocean and freshwater animals – plastic pollution. The 20 aquariums that make up the Aquarium Conservation Partnership (ACP) are committing to three business practices that bring their facilities closer to eliminating all single-use plastic materials.  Collectively more than 600 businesses and 160,000 individuals nationwide joined the aquariums by making business and lifestyle changes that reduce consumption of single-use plastic.

River Ready: NYC Parks’ Presents the Third Annual “Running of the Fish” in Bronx River at the Bronx Zoo
NYC Parks, in partnership with the Bronx River Alliance, the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) today came together to stock the Bronx River at the Bronx Zoo with 400 alewife, a type of river herring.

New Initiative Launched to Help Protect New York’s Great Whales
Equinor Wind US, the Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) today launched a joint project to deploy two acoustic buoys designed to expand the detection and monitoring of whale species found in the waters of New York Bight.

The Coney Island Polar Bear Club has announced donations totaling over $60,000 to local nonprofits in the Coney Island community, including a $20,000 donation for the New York Aquarium’s local marine conservation efforts.

New York Aquarium Receives 5 Endangered Atlantic Sturgeon  To Educate Public About Imperative to Prevent Its Extinction
The New York Aquarium has received five Endangered Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrhynchus oxyrhynchus) and has been designated a satellite research facility by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to educate aquarium visitors about the importance of protecting the historically important fish that were once plentiful in the Hudson River.
