Marine

India has an extensive coastline of more than 7,500 km that harbours several unique and critical ecosystems that support thousands of species and offer important breeding areas, nurseries, and aggregation and feeding grounds for invertebrates, fish, and marine megafauna. The very same coastline is also home to more than 35 crore people who depend on the oceans directly and indirectly,  with generations of cultural ties to their land.

The Marine Programme at WCS-India aims to conserve these unique habits and biodiversity by working with communities and partner organisations on-ground to address existing and potential threats using a multidisciplinary approach.

Aaron Savio Lobo

Aaron is a marine conservation scientist working at the interface of conservation and development with a PhD from the University of Cambridge. The overarching focus of his work has been to understand the ecological and social costs of seafood production systems and to provide evidence-based recommendations to a wide variety of stakeholders.

Christina de Souza

Christina holds an M.Sc. in Microbiology from Goa University and an Erasmus Mundus Joint European Master’s degree in Water and Coastal Management. She has previously worked in the coastal and marine domain on Goa’s coastal ecology and marine resources as a Junior Research Fellow at Goa University and later as an Associate Fellow at The Energy and Resources Institute.
