Desired work Experience: Prior Volunteer and/ or Intern experience in wildlife projects. 

Position tenure: 6 months with scope to extend based on performance. 

About the project: Grande, Saint George and Pequeno Island are located off the coast of Goa and boast a unique coral reef habitat that thrives within harsh climatic conditions. WCS-India’s project focuses on understanding how tourism and other commercially important or livelihood-dependent activities interact with the reef and the functional roles governing the habitats’ ability to resist increasing natural and anthropogenic pressures. Our aim is to work with local stakeholders and construct participatory management practices that mainstream biodiversity safeguards within resource-use activities and manage ecosystem services of the reef. 

About the position: The Research Intern will be onboarded immediately after screening interviews for a period of six months. If the selected candidate is Bengaluru-based, then the candidate will be expected to visit the WCS-India office a minimum of twice a week. If the selected candidate is Goa-based, then a hybrid schedule can be worked out accordingly. The Research Intern will be expected to learn about corals and coral reef biology. The Intern will be taught the necessary skills for data validation and analysis of the project. At the end of six months, if the Intern demonstrates adequate potential and interest, there will be an opportunity to extend the agreement.  

Role and responsibility:  

  • Learn to identify corals and study coral reef biology. 

  • Assist project team in data validation, analysis and managing project database. 

  • Run exploratory analysis for project-related academic outputs. 

  • Prepare creatives from project data. 

  • Assist team members in all project activities and not limited to social media deliverables, report writing etc.  

  • Collaborate with members of the Marine Programme on shared deliverables, wherever necessary.  

Required qualifications and skills:  

  • Master’s degree in Zoology, Marine Biology and/ or allied Lifesciences 

  • Prior experience in wildlife research (internship/ volunteering) 

  • Language proficiency: English 

  • Good working knowledge of MS Office. 

Desired skills and competencies: 

  • Demonstrated interest in coral reef ecology. 

  • Prior experience in species identification, data logging, managing databases and exploratory analysis.  

  • Prior experience in producing creatives – e.g., infographics, posters, and other outreach material. 

  • Desired Language Proficiency: Konkani  

  • Fluency in analytical and exploratory software such as R, QGIS or ArcGIS. 

  • Demonstrated experience in science writing. 

Compensation: INR 20,000/month – for a six-month duration.
